DSG Debuts Learning Resources for Policymakers, Civil Society, Students, and Educators

Over the past few years engaging with people around the world on solar radiation management (SRM), whether with communities, policymakers, researchers, or students, one question has come up again and again: “Where can I go to learn more?”
It’s a simple question, and a critical one. And yet there hasn’t been a clear, accessible answer. Interest in SRM has grown, but accessible educational resources have not kept pace. There have been a myriad of phenomenal reports in recent years from a range of institutions, like the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and the UN Environment Programme. But these reports require a baseline foundational knowledge to be able to engage with the ideas and debates they introduce.
This wasn’t just a question we heard from others; it quickly became one we were asking ourselves. As we designed capacity-building workshops and learning programs around SRM, we realized we lacked a central, reliable source of educational materials we could share. We needed resources that went beyond definitions and technical overviews—resources that addressed the full scope of SRM, including its governance, ethical implications, geopolitical dimensions, and justice concerns. We needed content that was not only factually accurate and unbiased, but also accessible to a wide range of audiences, from high school students to policymakers, from grassroots organizers to academic researchers. And we needed it to be easy to use, easy to translate, and flexible enough to adapt across cultural, political, and educational contexts.
So we set out to build these resources, and now, we are creating a place that can share these resources publicly. This month, DSG launched a dedicated library of free Learning Resources on our website to serve as a central location for learning about solar geoengineering. These materials are based on those we have developed for workshops and organizations we engage with. This library is designed for intuitive navigation, offering content structured into modules or sections, each focused on an overarching theme or aspect of solar geoengineering. It’s a place where anyone—student, policymaker, or simply curious—can go to start learning, keep exploring, and begin asking deeper questions.
These learning resources are built to serve different needs and a wide range of audiences, including students, policymakers, civil society, and the general public across 4 areas:
Right now, we have a range of explainers and deep dives, fact sheets and infographics. But these resources will continue to grow to include translations across multiple languages as well as a variety of multimedia resources designed to cater to different learning styles and preferences. This means videos, games, discussion guides, and more.
The ability to deliberate and develop perspectives on solar geoengineering requires access to unbiased and understandable information that meets people where they are. We hope that this is an important first step towards developing such a library to meet the growing global need for foundational knowledge in this space.
