SRM through a Climate Justice Lens: Developing a Civil Society Engagement Roadmap in Southern Africa Outcomes Report

As part of our sustained engagements in Africa, the Alliance for Just Deliberation on Solar Geoengineering (DSG), in partnership with CIVICUS and the Human Rights Institute of South Africa (HURISA), convened a regional workshop on May 8, 2025 in Cape Town. The workshop brought together civil society organizations from South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe to explore Solar Radiation Modification (SRM) through the lens of climate justice and human rights. Participants representing grassroots justice-oriented organizations examined how SRM accessibility and relevance to climate vulnerable communities in Southern Africa can support broader, more inclusive, and transparent multi-level engagements on these challenging technologies, while maintaining a demand for urgent action on mitigation and adaptation. Through a mix of learning modules, breakout sessions and individual activities, participants curated various perspectives and generated recommendations on SRM activities. These insights help clarify where additional support is needed and how DSG and its partners can adapt their engagement models to better address their needs in the region and in this domain.
